dc.description.abstractThe present Ph.D Thesis consists of eight chapters. Relevance of various issues newlinepertaining to education economics and nature, scope, objectives, hypothesis and newlineinterdisciplinary relevance of the study are discussed in Chapter I. Chapter II focuses on the newlineinternational, national aspects and issues relating to the returns to education and methods of newlineestimation of the same. Both theoretical and empirical studies have been reviewed in this newlinechapter. The study has identified some research gaps in the existing literature of the subject. newlineTo bridge the gaps in the existing literature the present study is an attempt to investigate the newlinecontributions of education to employment and earnings with special reference to West newlineBengal. The special focus has been given on impact of education on female employment and newlinein rural West Bengal. Chapter III deals with database and methodology. The major sources of newlinedata, area of study, important concepts and variables, and different methods and techniques newlinefor analysis of data have been discussed in this chapter. Both aggregated and unit level dis- newlineaggregated secondary data are used and sophisticated statistical and econometrics techniques newlineare used for analysis and interpretation of collected data. It follows deterministic as well as newlinestochastic approach to infer results of the study. Chapter IV explores different issues newlineregarding patterns and trends of education in West Bengal vis-à-vis India. It analyses both newlinephysical, and financial resource allocation in education. newlineHuman resource allocation is newlineexamined in terms of employment/unemployment by sectors, industries, levels of education, newlinegender and castes. Physical and financial resource allocation is analysed with different newlineindicators at a point of time and overtime during post-reforms era. Moreover, disparity in newlineeducation is analysed with respect to net attendance ratio, gross attendance ratio, and age newlinespecific attendance ratio
