Abstract
This research explores the integration of Community Medicine and Sociology as an innovative approach to addressing health promotion and disease prevention in rural areas of Maharashtra, particularly regions surrounding Mumbai such as Panvel, Raigad, and Lonavala. The study identifies the significant impact of socio-economic factors, education levels, cultural practices, social support networks, and environmental health risks on community health outcomes. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research collects data from 550 respondents, including farmers, medical staff, students, and rural women, to evaluate these determinants comprehensively. The findings reveal that socio-economic disparities, limited health literacy, and deep-rooted cultural beliefs significantly hinder access to healthcare and adoption of preventive health behaviours. Environmental challenges like poor sanitation, air and water pollution, and inadequate housing further exacerbate health issues. The role of Preventive Social Medicine (PSM) is highlighted as a crucial strategy in mitigating these challenges by emphasizing health education, community-based interventions, and disease prevention. Based on these insights, the research proposes actionable recommendations such as improving rural healthcare infrastructure, enhancing health education programs, promoting culturally sensitive health interventions, leveraging social networks, and addressing environmental health risks. The interdisciplinary collaboration between Community Medicine and Sociology offers a holistic approach to achieving health equity and building resilient rural communities capable of tackling future health challenges.
