In modern technological scenario, materials play a prominent role in all newlineEngineering Design. Today alloys and composites form the backbone of material newlineselection for any engineering applications. newlineAluminium alloys are those in which aluminium is the predominant metal. There newlineare two principal classifications named casting alloys or wrought alloys, both of which newlineare subdivided into the categories heat treatable and non heat treatable. About 85% of newlinealuminium is used for wrought products, for example rolled plates, foils and extrusions. newlineCopper has been the most common alloying element almost since the beginning of newlinethe aluminium industry, and a variety of alloys in which the copper is the major newlineaddition were developed. In the cast alloys, the basic structure consists of cored newlinedendrites of aluminium solid solution with variety of constituents at the grain newlineboundaries or interdendritic spaces forming a brittle, more or less continuous work of newlineeutectics. Wrought products consist of a matrix of aluminium solid solution with the newlineother soluble and insoluble constituents dispersed within it. newlineA composite material is a system of materials composed of two of more materials newline(mixed and bonded) on a macroscopic scale. A composite material is composed of newlinereinforcement (fibers, particulates, flakes) embedded in a matrix. The matrix holds the newlinereinforcement to form the desired shape and the reinforcement improves overall newlinemechanical properties of the matrix. When designed properly, the new combined newlinematerial exhibits better strength than each individual material. newlineComposite materials have been used for centuries, bricks reinforced with straw, newlinelaminated iron-steel swords, gun barrels, plasterboard and concrete etc. Today newlineindustrial innovation, improved energy planning, uncertain availability and sky newlinerocketing costs have created a greater interest in composites. Now that increasingly newlinesevere performance requirements are stopping many conventional monolithic materials newlineto limit the engineer s traditional approach of fitting the design to the pro
